What is SEER2?
SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. It's essentially the "miles per gallon" rating for your air conditioner. In 2023, the Department of Energy updated the testing procedures to better reflect real-world conditions (like ductwork static pressure), resulting in the new SEER2 standard.
Why the Change?
The old SEER testing conditions were a bit too perfect and didn't accurately simulate the restrictive ductwork found in most homes. SEER2 tests equipment under higher static pressure, giving homeowners a much more accurate picture of how efficient the unit will actually be once installed.
Minimum Requirements
In the Southwest region (including California), new AC installations must now meet a minimum of 14.3 SEER2 (equivalent to the old 15 SEER). Higher ratings like 18 or 20 SEER2 will cost more upfront but offer massive long-term energy savings.
