Don't Ignore Your HVAC System
Your heating and cooling system rarely breaks down completely without offering a few subtle—and sometimes not-so-subtle—hints first. Unfortunately, many homeowners ignore these early warning signs, hoping the problem will resolve itself. In the world of HVAC, ignoring symptoms almost always leads to more extensive damage and much higher repair bills.
The Golden Rule of HVAC
If your system sounds, smells, or feels different than it normally does, shut it off and call a professional. Running a struggling system will only multiply the cost of the repair.
1. Weak or Inconsistent Airflow
If you notice that the air coming from your vents is weak, or if some rooms are freezing while others are sweltering, you have an airflow problem. This can be caused by a variety of issues, ranging from a clogged air filter or blocked ductwork to a failing blower motor or frozen evaporator coil.
2. Strange and Unusual Noises
While no HVAC system operates in complete silence, you should be familiar with the normal hum of your unit. If you suddenly hear loud, unusual noises, it's time to call a technician. A squealing or screeching sound often indicates a worn belt or failing motor bearings. Banging or clanking noises usually mean a broken part is loose inside the compressor.
3. Frequent or Short Cycling
Your HVAC system is designed to run through complete heating or cooling cycles to maintain the temperature set on your thermostat. If you notice the system turning on, running for a very short period, and then shutting off—only to turn back on again a few minutes later—this is known as short cycling. Short cycling is terrible for your system's efficiency and lifespan.
4. Unpleasant Odors
The air coming from your vents should be relatively odorless. If you detect a strong, musty smell, it's a strong indicator of mold or mildew growing inside your ductwork or on your AC coils, which poses a significant health risk. A burning smell, especially a sharp, electrical odor, is a severe warning sign of a wiring issue or an overheating motor. If you smell burning plastic or electrical components, turn off your system immediately and call for emergency service.
5. Unexplained Increases in Energy Bills
If your energy bills have suddenly spiked without a corresponding increase in usage or extreme weather, your HVAC system is likely the culprit. When components wear out, coils get dirty, or refrigerant levels drop, the system loses efficiency and draws more power to achieve the same level of comfort. A sudden jump in operating costs is a clear sign that a professional tune-up or repair is needed.
