If it's 110 degrees outside, expecting your house to reach 68 degrees is asking for continuous, non-stop operation that will burn out your compressor. Set your thermostat to 78 during extreme heat waves.

Help Your AC Breathe

Ensure all indoor return vents are unblocked by furniture or rugs. Outside, clear away any weeds, bushes, or debris within two feet of your outdoor condenser unit. The system needs massive amounts of airflow to reject heat into the atmosphere.

Block the Sun

Solar heat gain through windows is the number one source of heat entering your home. Close your blinds and thick curtains on south and west-facing windows during the peak heat of the afternoon. This takes a massive load off your AC system.
