Your HVAC air filter is arguably the most critical maintenance component you can manage yourself. A clean filter protects the expensive internal components of your furnace and AC from dust, hair, and debris, while simultaneously improving the air your family breathes.
Understanding MERV Ratings
MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. The higher the MERV rating, the finer the filtration. A MERV 1-4 filter (like cheap fiberglass ones) only catches large dust bunnies. A MERV 8-13 pleated filter catches pollen, pet dander, and even some bacteria. We generally recommend MERV 8 or 11 for standard residential use.
Warning: High MERV Isn't Always Better
Installing a MERV 14+ filter in a standard residential system can actually restrict airflow so severely that it suffocates the blower motor, leading to freezing coils and premature failure. Always consult with us before upgrading to hospital-grade filters.
How Often Should You Change It?
As a rule of thumb, check your filter every 30 days. If you have pets, live in a dusty area like the high desert, or run your system constantly, you will likely need to replace it every 1-2 months. If you hold the filter up to a light and can't see through it, it's time for a replacement.
