Question 1

Why Is My AC Running but Not Cooling My House?

Accepted Answer

When your air conditioner runs continuously without lowering indoor temperatures, the most frequent causes in Palmdale and Lancaster are: (1) a severe desert-dust clogged air filter restricting evaporator airflow, (2) a frozen evaporator coil choking thermal exchange, (3) a failed dual run capacitor preventing the compressor from starting or pumping refrigerant, (4) pitted or welded contactor points, or (5) a refrigerant leak (R-410A) dropping suction pressure below 32°F. Turn off cooling at the thermostat immediately if the indoor coil is iced to prevent catastrophic compressor liquid slugging, and call a C-20 licensed technician for superheat and subcooling triage.

Question 2

How Long Should a Residential AC System Last in the Antelope Valley?

Accepted Answer

In the Antelope Valley, a well-maintained residential central AC system typically lasts 10 to 14 years, compared to the national average of 15 to 20 years. The shorter lifespan is caused by extreme high-desert operating hours (running 12-16 hours daily from June through September in 100°F+ ambient heat), persistent silica dust scouring condenser coils, and intense thermal expansion cycles. Semi-annual maintenance and timely capacitor replacements are essential to reach the 14-year mark.

Question 3

What SEER2 Rating Should I Choose for an Antelope Valley Home?

Accepted Answer

For Antelope Valley homeowners, we recommend a minimum of 15.2 to 16 SEER2 (equivalent to older 16-17 SEER). In our harsh desert climate with 100°F+ summer stretches and high Southern California Edison (SCE) tiered electrical rates, upgrading to a two-stage 16-18 SEER2 unit or a variable-capacity inverter system (18-20+ SEER2) yields dramatic electricity reductions of 35% to 50%, with a typical payback period of 3 to 5 years.

Question 4

How Much Does a New Central AC Cost in Palmdale and Lancaster?

Accepted Answer

A new central air conditioning system installed in the Antelope Valley typically costs between $5,500 and $11,500 for a standard 3 to 5 ton residential split system. Total investment depends on equipment tonnage, efficiency rating (SEER2), electrical disconnect condition, and ductwork modifications. Turnkey installation includes the outdoor condensing unit, indoor cased evaporator coil, new refrigerant lines, digital thermostat, Title 24 compliance testing, and permit pull.

Question 5

Why Is My Furnace Blowing Cold Air in the Antelope Valley?

Accepted Answer

When your furnace blower runs but circulates unheated or cold air, the primary causes in High Desert homes are: (1) a cracked or failed hot surface igniter unable to light the gas burners, (2) an oxidized flame sensor causing the gas valve to shut down within 3-5 seconds after ignition, (3) a tripped high-limit safety switch due to an airflow-choking dirty air filter, or (4) the thermostat fan switch set to "ON" rather than "AUTO". Check your air filter and thermostat settings first; if the burners fail to ignite, contact a C-20 licensed technician for safe gas and safety switch testing.

Question 6

How Much Does a New Furnace Cost Installed in the Antelope Valley?

Accepted Answer

A new residential gas furnace installed in the Antelope Valley typically costs between $3,500 and $7,500. Pricing varies based on heating capacity (40,000 to 100,000 BTU), fuel efficiency (80% standard AFUE vs 96%+ high-efficiency condensing units), and installation complexity (attic vs closet vs garage). High-efficiency units qualify for utility rebates and federal tax credits that significantly lower net investment.

Question 7

How Do I Know If My Furnace Needs to Be Replaced or Repaired?

Accepted Answer

You should consider replacing rather than repairing your furnace if: (1) the unit is 15+ years old, (2) repair costs exceed 50% of the price of a new system, (3) you have required multiple repairs over the past two winters, (4) heating bills have spiked significantly despite normal use, or (5) a cracked heat exchanger is detected. A cracked heat exchanger poses an immediate carbon monoxide danger and requires immediate shutdown.

Question 8

Do Heat Pumps Work in Antelope Valley Cold Winters?

Accepted Answer

Yes, modern cold-climate inverter heat pumps work exceptionally well in Antelope Valley winters. Units equipped with variable-capacity inverter compressors (such as Bosch and Daikin systems) maintain 100% heating output down to 15°F and continue producing heat down to -5°F, well below the Antelope Valley typical winter low of 25°F. For extreme peace of mind, dual-fuel hybrid systems pair a heat pump with an auxiliary gas furnace for sub-freezing nights.

Question 9

How Much Can I Save by Switching to a Heat Pump?

Accepted Answer

Antelope Valley homeowners typically save 25% to 45% on combined annual heating and cooling energy costs after upgrading to an inverter heat pump. Because heat pumps transfer heat rather than generating it by burning fuel, they achieve efficiency ratings exceeding 300%. When paired with federal tax credits ($2,000) and utility incentives, the payback period is typically 3 to 5 years.

Question 10

Why Won't My Furnace Turn On During Cold Weather?

Accepted Answer

When freezing temperatures hit the Antelope Valley and your furnace fails to turn on, the most frequent causes are: (1) a safety lockout from a blocked return air filter, (2) a tripped furnace door interlock switch, (3) a closed or shut-off gas supply cock, (4) a tripped 15A/20A electrical breaker, or (5) dead thermostat batteries. Try resetting power to the furnace once. If it does not start, call AV Action Air 24/7 emergency dispatch at (661) 267-0078 for rapid diagnostic service.

Question 11

What Is Included in an Antelope Valley Winter Furnace Tune-Up?

Accepted Answer

Our comprehensive 21-point winter furnace tune-up prepares your system for High Desert freezes. It includes: electronic heat exchanger carbon monoxide testing, gas burner and flame sensor cleaning, gas manifold pressure calibration, draft inducer motor testing, blower motor amperage and capacitor testing, safety limit switch checks, thermostat heat cycle calibration, and air filter inspection. Routine tune-ups prevent up to 85% of winter emergency breakdowns.

Question 12

Why Is Steam Coming from My Heat Pump in Winter?

Accepted Answer

Steam coming from your outdoor heat pump during cold winter mornings in Palmdale or Lancaster is completely normal. It indicates the system has entered its automatic defrost cycle to melt frost off the outdoor coil. The reversing valve temporarily shifts to cooling mode, sending hot refrigerant through the outdoor coil for 3 to 8 minutes, causing melted ice to evaporate as white steam. If the unit is encased in a solid block of ice or blows cold air indoors for over 30 minutes, the defrost control board or sensor requires service.

Question 14

Why Is There Weak Air Flow Coming Out of My Vents?

Accepted Answer

Weak airflow from your registers is typically caused by: (1) a heavily dust-choked air filter choking the return air intake, (2) an iced-up evaporator coil physically blocking the air plenum, (3) disconnected, crushed, or leaking flexible ductwork in your attic, or (4) a weakening blower motor capacitor or dust-coated squirrel cage wheel. Start by inspecting and replacing your air filter. If airflow remains weak, have a technician measure static pressure across your duct system.

Question 15

Why Is My Heating or AC Unit Driving Up High Utility Bills?

Accepted Answer

An HVAC unit driving up sky-high utility bills without keeping your home comfortable is suffering from: (1) dirty condenser or evaporator coils coated in High Desert silica dust, (2) substantial ductwork leaks losing 20% to 35% of conditioned air into the attic, (3) low refrigerant charge forcing the compressor to run 3x longer, or (4) outdated single-stage equipment operating far below modern SEER2 standards. Professional maintenance restores up to 25% of lost efficiency.

Question 17

How Often Should a Commercial Ice Machine Be Cleaned in the Antelope Valley?

Accepted Answer

In the Antelope Valley, commercial ice machines should be professionally descaled, sanitized, and deep-cleaned at least every 3 to 6 months. While FDA food code sets a 6-month baseline, the Antelope Valley exceptionally hard water (rich in calcium and magnesium) and airborne yeast in restaurants accelerate scale buildup on evaporator plates, causing freeze-up failures and harvest cycle errors.

Question 18

How Often Should Commercial Rooftop AC Units (RTUs) Be Serviced?

Accepted Answer

Commercial rooftop packaged units (RTUs) in the Antelope Valley should be serviced quarterly (4 times per year). High Desert commercial systems operate 12 to 18 hours daily, and rooftop ambient temperatures frequently exceed 125°F on tar roofs. Quarterly service ensures fan belts are tensioned, economizers comply with Title 24, filters are replaced before choking airflow, and condenser coils are cleaned of dust.

Question 19

What Is a VRF System and Is It Right for My Commercial Building?

Accepted Answer

A Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) system is a commercial HVAC technology that uses a single outdoor condensing unit connected to multiple indoor fan coil units with independent temperature control. VRF systems modulate refrigerant flow to deliver exact cooling or heating to each zone simultaneously, reducing energy consumption by 30% to 40% compared to traditional rooftop units. They are ideal for multi-tenant offices, medical clinics, and hotels.

Question 20

Why Is My Commercial Walk-In Cooler Not Holding Temperature?

Accepted Answer

When a commercial walk-in cooler drifts above 41°F, the most common causes are: (1) worn or torn door gaskets allowing hot kitchen air to infiltrate, (2) an iced-up evaporator coil due to a failed defrost timer or klixon termination switch, (3) a dust-clogged condensing unit coil, (4) low refrigerant charge from an active leak, or (5) a failing evaporator fan motor. Check the door seal and clean the condenser coil immediately. If the box does not recover within 30 minutes, call AV Action Air for emergency C-38 service.

Question 24

How Often Should I Change My HVAC Air Filter in the Antelope Valley?

Accepted Answer

In the Antelope Valley, standard 1-inch pleated air filters must be checked every 30 days and replaced every 30 to 45 days during peak summer cooling and winter heating seasons. High-desert windstorms and fine silica dust load filter media 2 to 3 times faster than in coastal areas. If you have pets, allergies, or live near open desert, monthly replacement is essential. Upgrading to a 4-inch or 5-inch deep media cabinet allows filters to last 6 to 9 months with superior airflow.

Question 25

How Can I Eliminate Desert Dust and Allergens Inside My Home?

Accepted Answer

To eliminate desert dust, pollen, and seasonal wildfire smoke in the Antelope Valley, we recommend a three-tiered indoor air quality approach: (1) Upgrade to high-capacity MERV 11 to MERV 13 whole-home media filtration, (2) Install a whole-home air purifier (such as an iWave bipolar ionizer or UV germicidal light) inside your air handler to neutralize pathogens and clump microscopic dust particles for easy filter capture, and (3) Perform AeroSeal duct testing to seal attic duct leaks that draw dusty unconditioned air into your living areas.
